Am I Too Short for a Reformer? My Honest Take
I get asked about height from both directions. Tall people worry they will be cramped, and shorter people worry they will be swimming on a machine that is too big for them, or that they will not be able to reach anything. I have a personal stake in this one, because I am on the shorter side myself, so let me tell you exactly how it goes.
In this article
Can you be too short for a reformer?
No. You really cannot be too short for a reformer. The whole machine is built to adjust to you. The footbar moves, the headrest adjusts, the straps shorten, and you choose where you sit or lie on the carriage. A shorter person simply sets it up to suit their body, the same way a taller person does. You are never fighting the machine to fit it. It meets you exactly where you are.
I am 5'1", and here is my experience
I am not going to talk in theory here, because I live this one every week.
Being shorter has genuinely never held me back. I set the footbar where it suits me, shorten the straps so there is no slack, and away I go. If anything, the adjustability is my favourite part, because the machine becomes mine for the session rather than a one size fits all piece of kit. Shorter, taller, somewhere in between, it is the same reformer set up differently.

Why the reformer adjusts to you
This is the bit that makes height a non issue in both directions. A reformer has several things you set to your own body. The footbar moves to different positions so your legs are at the right angle. The headrest adjusts so your neck is supported. The straps and ropes shorten or lengthen so there is no slack to reach for. And you control where you sit, kneel or lie on the carriage. Put together, that means a shorter person and a taller person can train on the exact same machine, each with it set up perfectly for them.
But will I be able to reach everything?
This is the most common worry I hear from shorter people, and the answer is yes. Because the straps shorten, you are not stretching to grab a rope that is set for someone a foot taller. Because the footbar moves, your feet land where they should. And for the moments where reach matters, you simply position yourself a little further forward on the carriage. None of it requires a special machine. It is all built into how a reformer works.

Do you need a special reformer if you are short?
No, and this is the same answer I give taller people. Our reformers are essentially the same, and every one of them adjusts in the same ways, so any model in the range will suit a shorter frame beautifully. That means you get to choose on the things that actually matter to your life, like the finish and whether it folds away, rather than worrying about size. Pick the one you love. It will fit you.
Setting it up for a shorter frame
A few small things make it feel tailor made. Bring the footbar to a closer setting so your knees are comfortable. Shorten the straps so there is gentle tension rather than slack. Set the headrest to support your neck. And start with lighter springs while you learn the movements, then build from there. Two minutes of setup and the machine feels like it was made for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you be too short for a reformer?
No. The footbar, headrest and straps all adjust, and you choose where you sit on the carriage, so shorter people set it up to suit their body. There is no minimum height for a reformer.
I am 5 foot 1, will a reformer fit me?
Yes. I am 5 foot 1 and train on the reformer comfortably, including a bit of everything in the studio. You adjust the footbar and straps to your frame and it fits beautifully.
Will I be able to reach the straps if I am short?
Yes. The straps and ropes shorten so there is no slack, and you can sit a little further forward on the carriage when needed. Reach is not an issue for shorter people.
Do shorter people need a special reformer?
No. Every reformer in our range adjusts the same way, so any model suits a shorter frame. You can choose purely on finish and whether it folds away.
